BERWICK became grid locked on Monday afternoon when a highpressure gas main was ruptured.
Emergency services rushed to Lyall Road after an excavator working on road works severed the underground main about 3.30pm.
Police and CFA firefighters closed Lyall Road between High Street and Wilson Street and cordoned off the area to avoid the risk of fire.
Crews were on scene for an hour waiting for a gas maintenance crew to arrive and shut down the supply.
Meanwhile, traffic banked up throughout the town and congested surrounding streets, adding to Berwick’s normal peak traffic issues.
