IONA’S first XI is in a tight game, defending 82 against Buln Buln after a lacklustre day with the bat on Saturday.
Iona was sent into bat and started poorly, Davidson out for one.
Luke Ferguson looked in good touch, but lacked support as Daniel Tomasetti and Craig Byrnes fell in consecutive balls.
Scott Hoare then joined Ferguson at the crease with the pair playing some excellent shots and added 71 runs for the fourth wicket. The partnership ended when Hoare hauled out on 46 and Ferguson fell 12 runs later, run out for 41.
The lower order then failed to take advantage of the earlier pair’s hard work as it collapsed, three wickets falling with the score on 110.
It was only thanks to George Lineham with 22 and Matt Duffy seven not out that Iona was able to reach 141.
Buln Buln began its innings shakily also losing an early wicket, J. Jagoe edging one to the reliable Byrnes of the bowling of Hoare.
Not long after Hoare picked up another wicket and the dangerous B.J. Lewien was run out for 15 and Josh Saik chipped in with a wicket just before the end of play to see the contest delicately poised with Buln 4/59.
SECONDS
Iona was put into field against a Warragul side that has struggled recently.
That trend looked to continue as good tight bowling from Iona caused the Warragul top order to play a couple of rash shots and see it at 4/26 relatively early.
Jason Sheedy was the major taker with two.
Kane Arnott and Ritchie Parsonage then put on a handy partnership of 37.
Arnott was the more aggressive, the partnership ending when Parsonage cut one straight to Phil Medley and soon after Arnott was cleaned up for 37 by Jason Sheedy who now had four wickets to his name.
The lower order then made a couple of small contributions, but it was the lastwicket partnership between J. Davidson and B. Davis that proved more then handy as they added another 24 to the Warragul total.
Ross Donoghue then trapped Davis in front for 15 and Davidson was unbeaten on 19.
Jason Sheedy was the main wicket taker with 4/39 from 18 overs and Ross Donoghue 2/21 along with Dave Kelly 2/26 also did there job in seeing Warragul dismissed for 126.
In response Iona is 0/43 with Jason Sheedy on 22 and Jason Kelly on 20.
THIRDS
Iona opted to field against Buln Buln and started well picking up two early wickets.
Brian Sell and N. Fawcett then set about restoring order for Buln Buln as it put on a partnership worth 59 until Fawcett was out caught for 22.
Sell marched on and reached his 50, but was out soon after, bowled by Will Braaksma for 55. Mick O’Neill (21) and Ritchie Davey (22) both made handy contributions.
The Buln Buln lower order though was unable to put on any decent partnerships due to good bowling from Nathan Vistarini and Richard Mitchell who both finished the innings with three wickets.
Buln Buln was bowled out for 174 in 64 overs.
