FIRE damaged shop fittings in Beaconsfield last Wednesday.
The fire, at a massage and beauty therapy centre, is believed to have started after towels in a tumble drier overheated.
A nearby business operator raised the alarm about 10pm after hearing the smoke detector go off.
More than 30 firefighters from the Beaconsfield, Berwick and Narre Warren units fought the blaze.
Firefighters had to cut their way into the shop, which was closed for the evening.
CFA brigade support officer Elissa Bourne said the fire caused considerable smoke and heat damage.
Beaconsfield CFA captain Michael Ott said the incident proved the value of smoke detectors.
“It could have been a lot worse,” he said.
Mr Ott said the fire took about 45 minutes to bring under control.
Staff at the massage and beauty therapy centre thanked firefighters for their work and said after cleaning up on Thursday that it was back to business as usual.
