Smaller market on limited quality

THERE were approximately 270 export and 250 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 270 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present but not all operating fully in a mostly dearer market.
Quality was quite limited with fewer grain assisted lines and secondary cattle throughout.
A very limited selection of heavy weight vealers suited to butchers sold around five cents per kilogram dearer and more for some isolated sales.
Yearling trade steers gained five cents with the heifer portion kicking up 10 cents to 20 cents.
Grown steers improved seven cents to eight cents while the larger and better selection of bullocks eased slightly.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butchers sold from 380 cents to 403 cents. Yearling trade steers made between 354 cents and 392 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 330 cents and 392 cents.
Grown steers made from 335 cents to 378 cents. Bullocks sold from 328 cents to 364 cents.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made between 293 cents and 316 cents with the crossbred portion between 300 cents and 342 cents.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 12 September is: 1, Rodwells; 2, Elders; 3, Nathan Gibbon Livestock; 4, Landmark; 5, Alex Scott and Staff; 6, Everitt, Seeley and Bennetts; 7, S.E.J.
