Buyers hold back in softer market

THERE were approximately 550 export and 450 young cattle penned at the Victorian Livestock Exchange representing an increase of 280 head week-on-week.
The usual buying group was present but not all operating fully in a softer market.
Quality was fairly good with a larger selection of well-finished grown steers and bullocks on offer.
Vealers sold from firm up to 10 cents per kilogram easier for the limited offering.
Quality varied considerably in the yearling trade run with the steers selling from mostly firm to a few cents cheaper while the heifer portion slipped up to 10 cents in places.
Grown steers sold from mostly firm to five cents cheaper while the bullocks eased three cents to nine cents and heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers slipped eight cents.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butcher orders sold from 335 cents to 380 cents, yearling trade steers made between 320 cents and 368 cents, yearling heifers to the trade sold between 305 cents and 365 cents, and grown steers made from 300 cents to 334 cents.
Bullocks sold from 300 cents to 322 cents, heavy weight grown heifers made mostly between 262 cents and 312 cents while heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers sold between 268 cents and 312 cents.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 21 November is: 1, Rodwells; 2, Alex Scott and Staff; 3, Elders; 4, Landmark; 5, Nathan Gibbon Livestock; 6, SEJ; 7, Everitt, Seeley and Bennetts.
The next store sale is on Thursday 17 November at 10am.
