THE leader board is crowded after the first round of the Beaconhills Country Golf Club’s championships played on Saturday
Matthew Buff has his nose in front, having posted a gross 73.
However there are six players behind him on 74 Paul Capper (defending champion), Ryan Fuller, David Crowe, Joe Marsiglio, Stephen Murray and Sean Gray.
Andrew Conn is sitting one shot further back on 75.
The first round was played on the Old Course and the concurrent competition of the day was a monthly medal event.
There will, however, be a playoff for the February medal as Sean Gray (10) and Bill McGrann (18) both scored nett 64, winning A and Bgrades respectively.
Martin Balsarini was the Cgrade winner on a countback with a nett 68.
There was also a competition on the Lakes course for those not in the championships.
Lady captain Libby Michelle (24) had an outstanding 63 nett to win the competition from runnerup Paul Blundell (10) 67 nett.
In the ninehole junior competition, Cain Hillier’s nett 30 was the winning score.
SUNDAY RESULTS
Sunday was a warm day on the Lakes and Joe Karac’s 46 points outpaced the field, with Roger Blachut the nearest, coming in behind him with 43 points.
The Peninsula District junior pennant also began on Sunday, with Section 2 winning at home 5/0 and Section 3 winning away 3/2, after Vanessa Tranfield, playing at numberone won her match on the 18th hole.

MIDWEEK RESULTS
These were all held on the Lakes course.
Anthony Quirk was the winner of Tuesday’s competition with 44 points, to runnerup Paul Jones with 42 points.
Nearestthepin winners were first: Bob Eddington, third: Eric Booth, 11th: Alex McKay, 16th: Bert Gruber and 18th: Roy Solomon.
Thursday’s large field had three grade winners – Agrade: Terry Crowe (handicap 9) 44 points, Bgrade: Graham H. Martin (14) 43 points and Cgrade: Stuart Peake (22) 41 points.

Saturday night, the ‘summer evening on the lawn’ function saw members and their families enjoy a meal, music, a drink and even some cricket.
Longtime member Kevin Williams drew the major raffle. Robert Williams (no relation) won first prize, Laurie Fenton, second prize, Phyllis Woods bought a ticket for her grandson that won third prize.
Fourth and fifth prize tickets went to members of the Rennison and Chambers families.
