CROSSING the main street in Beaconsfield should be easier and far safer following the installation of pedestrian signals.
The pedestrian crossing over the Old Princes Highway was recently completed, allowing people to cross with safety the wide street separating the strip shopping precinct.
Cardinia Shire mayor Kate Lempriere said the council lobbied VicRoads on behalf of the local community over three years to have these pedestrian lights installed but was unsuccessful.
Concern for residents’ safety and also to improve conditions for pedestrians in Beaconsfield township precinct prompted the council to redistribute funding and provide the $160,000 to fully fund the project.
“We are delighted that we took the initiative for the people of Beaconsfield,” Cr Lempriere said.
“The lights are now in operation and residents and visitors can now cross more safely increasing the accessibility of the whole precinct.”
