Market lift defies trend

With reduced numbers across all yardings across the state, there was a lift last week for the Wednesday fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange with an extra 65 head yarded and this was mainly in the vealer section.
Several pen lots of stores helped the sale with re-stockers keen among the bidding and with small numbers in the bullock, heifer and steer categories, judging any change was very difficult.
The vealer section did contain a fair percentage of secondary head and this pulled the average back but in the better pens demand was strong which lifted the top price this week by six cents but, overall, veal slipped 12 cents due to the larger percentage of secondary head.
Three bullocks made to 300 cents and averaged 272.5 cents, seven heifers made to 334.6 cents and averaged 297.8 cents, five steers made to 255 cents, and averaged 240.6 cents, 161 veal made to 351.2 cents and averaged 299 cents.
The better pens on Thursday sold to stronger demand while the secondary pens eased in demand.
Of the 360 cows penned, the top price was 24 cents better at 281.6 cents and the week’s average was firm at 202.2 cents.
There were 20 bulls yarded with a larger number of good heavy bodies on offer. This lifted the top to 295.2 cents and the average rose five cents to 252.3 cents.
The draw for 23 and 24 August is: 1, SEJ; 2, Scotts; 3, Landmark; 4, Gibbon; 5, Elders.
