Buyers compete in dearer market

There were approximately 290 export and 200 young cattle penned at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange, representing an increase of 140 head week-on-week.
The usual buying group was present and competing in a dearer market.
Quality improved with more prime cattle on offer and a greater proportion showing more spring on their backs.
A slightly larger selection of vealers jumped 15 cents to 25 cents for better quality.
Yearling trade steers sold 10 cents to 20 cents dearer for a handful.
Yearling heifers to the trade improved five cents to 15 cents.
Grown steers and bullocks gained 13 cents to 14 cents. Manufacturing steers were a few cents better.
Vealers suited to butchers sold from 292 cents to 335 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 280 cents and 295 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold mostly between 260 cents and 285 cents after a top of 310 cents.
Grown steers made from 256 cents to 292 cents, bullocks sold from 270 cents to 290 cents, and heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish made between 255 cents and 265 cents.
A handful of Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 232 cents and 242 cents with the crossbred portion between 247 cents and 265 cents.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 16 October is: 1, SEJ; 2, Everitt, Seeley and Bennetts; 3, Alex Scott and Staff; 4, Landmark; 5, Elders; 6, Rodwells; 7, Nathan Gibbon Livestock.
The next store sale is Thursday 19 October at 10am.
