Quality drives market higher

There were approximately 380 export and 350 young cattle penned representing an increase of 250 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present and competing in a dearer market.
Quality improved again with a larger proportion of finished cattle throughout.
A larger and better quality selection of vealers sold five cents to 10 cents dearer.
A limited selection of yearling trade steers and a good offering of heifers sold firm on most sales. Competition strengthened for secondary young cattle suited to feed or turn out.
Grown steers and bullocks sold two cents to three cents dearer, heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers lifted 17 cents while the crossbred portion gained 14 cents, and vealers suited to butchers sold from 306 cents to 339 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 285 cents and 330 cents, yearling heifers to the trade sold between 262 cents and 295 cents, young steers suited to feed and restock made from 245 cents to 336 cents and grown steers sold from 270 cents to 290 cents.
Bullocks made between 265 cents and 290 cents, heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 235 cents and 258 cents with the crossbred portion between 253 cents and 276 cents.
