PAKENHAM car enthusiast Joe Zammit’s striking attraction to the Pontiac has been apparent since he was first able to get behind the wheel.
His first car was a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am that he bought for $12,500 almost 25 years ago.
Mr Zammit, 42, still owns and drives the vehicle, but has since expanded his collection with a 1958 Pontiac Catalina Coupe and a 1970½ Pontiac Formula.
“I just love the style and shape of the cars. It’s something different, rather than just a normal Ford or Holden,” he said.
“You get a fair few looks and people turning around and chasing it down to see what it is.”
Mr Zammit said his son, John, 4, has already claimed one of the Pontiacs for himself despite barely being out of a cot.
“I try to get the kids involved; they’ll end up getting the car anyway,” he said.
“John’s already asked. He’s getting in before Daniel (Mr Zammit’s oneyearold son) is old enough to speak.”
Mr Zammit has restored the Trans Am to its original condition, while the Coupe, which has had only one previous owner, has been left untouched.
The Formula is still a workinprogress.
His restoration work has not come without expense, but he has one very good reason for not disclosing the amount.
“I wouldn’t want to say that. I might get a divorce out of it,” Mr Zammit laughed.
It was his brotherinlaw, Joe, who introduced him to the automobile world and the passion has taken off since.
Mr Zammit is a member of the Pontiac Car Club and will be heading to the annual Pontiac Nationals for the Easter long weekend.
“All the states get together. This year, we are going to Cootamundra in New South Wales and we get to meet different club members from interstate, go cruising, and wine and dine,” he said.
Mr Zammit chose not to reveal his ultimate special moment in his car, but did divulge one fond memory.
“It doesn’t get much better than going cruising with the top off down the Great Ocean Road,” he said.
