Pennant eludes Berwick bowlers

BERWICK Bowls Club’s divisiontwo side fought out the grand final against FootscrayYarraville on Saturday, finally going down by 28 shots.
The game was played in wet and blustery conditions on a holding green at Glen Waverley before a large and partisan crowd from both clubs.
The combine quickly adapted to the tricky conditions and it was apparent that Berwick would be in for a hard day with the exception of Peter Frearson’s rink that scored seven shots on the second end to establish an early lead that it continually extended throughout the day.
The combine’s strategy was simple bowls in the head that repeatedly saw it extend its lead to 12 shots by the halftime break.
For Berwick, Frearson’s rink was well in control and Fothergill’s rink trailed by four.
However the rinks of Keith Fox and Mark Walker were under siege.
With a strong team effort with Les Webb leading well, John Hammond solid at second and Dave Reddy offering total support, Peter Frearson’s rink dominated.
However, the remaining rinks could not stop the bleeding and the combine ran out worthy winners.
Rink results:
L. Webb, J. Hammond, D. Reddy and (skip) P. Frearson + 25 shots.
L. Edwards, R. Gladman, M. Adams and (skip) C. Fothergill 8 shots.
D. Fullaway, R. Townley, G. Harris and (skip) K. Fox 21 shots.
T. Quigley, P. Clavarino, D. Harlow and (skip) M. Walker 24 shots.

STATE FINALS

Despite the disappointment at losing the grand final, Berwick will take part in the divisiontwo State Finals at Corowa on 21 April.
The metropolitan and country section winners will compete to determine the top divisiontwo side for the state.
