Kaytie an inspiration to staff

By Elizabeth Lillis
THE staff at Cardinia LiFE YMCA have been inspired by the recovery of a young Berwick child treated at the Royal Children’s Hospital to support the Good Friday Appeal.
Community and families coordinator Melanie Wursthorn said Cardinia LiFE would be open from 10am to noon this Friday to raise money for the Good Friday Appeal.
She said the centre was normally closed at this time but staff would be donating their time for special event.
“The pool, stadium and health club will all be open.
“Entry will be by gold coin donation, with the money going to the Good Friday Appeal,” Ms Wursthorn said.
Funds raised through the appeal go to support the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
Ms Wursthorn was a visitor to the hospital when her boyfriend’s niece Kaytie Overdyk was a patient.
The 13monthold from Berwick had a condition called traceo oescophageal fistula, which affected her ability to eat.
She was successfully treated at the hospital over a number of months and is now at home.
Ms Wursthorn said the good treatment Kaytie received at the hospital inspired her to suggest Cardinia LiFE support the Good Friday Appeal.
“I thought it would be a good cause to support after seeing how they looked after Kaytie,” she said.
Two hours of activities have been planned at the centre with a playon inflatable in the main pool and Basil, the jumping castle in the stadium.
“There will be stadium games and a body pump class at 10.30am.
“We will also have a Easter raffle and Easter buns from Brumbys,” Ms Wursthorn said.
