Karac kicks off new year in style

JOE Karac scored a blistering 72 off the stick to win the first monthly medal of the new year at Beaconhills in the members’ competition last Saturday. It was also the best A Grade and gross score and resulted in an impressive nett return of 62.
The B Grade prize went, on a countback, to Doug Rowe with a nett 69. Jeff Clowes in C Grade scored nett 63, which would often win the medal.
Mark Henderson and Aaron Couper had tied for the December medal, both scoring an outstanding nett 61. The pair always play together, as they did on the closely fought December medal day, but they split up for the play-off this month. It was still extremely close, with Couper (nett 71) edging out Henderson (nett 73).
Plenty of golf, both in and out of competition, has been played during the Christmas and New Year break and last Sunday, two players who have been performing well recently featured prominently. Ciaran Kelly won with 44 points, with Andrew Sheehan runner-up with 42 points on a countback from Peter Hamilton.
On Saturday 27 December, Wayne Johnson, who was paired with Rob Darlison, won the four-ball competition. With 49 points, they won on a countback from Graham Kelly and Rob Fogarty. Bob Pitman and Sheehan both had 40 points to tie the following day, with Pitman winning on a countback.
On Tuesday 30 December, Hayden Nisbet won A Grade with 36 points, while Ron Aimer took B Grade with 38. The first winners of the new year on Thursday were Graham McLure (A Grade) and Geoff Sharpe (B Grade).
Although the ladies are in their summer break, matchplay rounds are being held to decide the winner of the Summer Cup, while Nancy Cockram and Jean Fellowes are organising the 13-hole competition series. Ladies’ opening day will be on 4 February.
