Car airborne in Pakenham crash

A CAR flew through the air before colliding with three vehicles in Pakenham’s John Street last Wednesday.
Shoppers described the smash as like “a stunt out of a Hollywood movie” and police say it was fortunate nobody was injured.
A Mitsubishi Magna, driven by an 83-year-old Kooweerup man, became airborne and mounted a Ford sedan before collecting another two cars.
The crash occurred at Pakenham’s busiest intersection – the Main Street-John Street roundabout – at about 1.30pm.
Pakenham Police Sergeant Neville Seamer said the man had parked near the Pakenham Library and went to straighten up his car when the accelerator became stuck.
His car then “flew through the air” over the wrong side of the roundabout, ran over the parked Ford sedan and sideswiped two vehicles, Sgt Seamer said.
A large crowd had gathered in John Street by the time the Mitsubishi Magna came to a halt outside Cactus Black.
The driver told police: “The further it went the faster it got.”
One witness, who was waiting to turn at the roundabout, said the crash was like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster.
“I couldn’t believe it – he was flying through the air so fast,” she said.
Police directed traffic at the Main Street-John Street roundabout for about an hour while the crash was cleared.
