Dairy trophy lives on

THE James Sydney Thewlis Perpetual Memorial Trophy is presented every year to the Champion dairy cow of the Pakenham Agricultural Show.
Mr Sydney Thewlis was serving in his fifth year as president of the Pakenham Agricultural Society, when he sadly passed away in 1960.
Prior to that he served as secretary for more than ten years and was presented with a life membership.
“The trophy is presented in memory of his contribution to the show,” said cattle superintendent, Roger Leamon.
Mr Thewlis’s daughter, Verna Thewlis, also a life member of the show society, presents the trophy in honour of her father each year.
The winner of the first memorial trophy in 1961 was W. Blum. Some other winners since then include J.R. Canoby in 1965, S. McCraw in 1970, P. Malcolm in 1976, N.M. Stephenson in 1981, G.D. Templeton in 1990 and Ian Anderson in 2005.
