Men’s Shed a popular spot

EVERY man needs a shed – and now those living in Kooweerup have one close to home.
Men can meet, have fun and get information on a range of issues at a men’s shed at the Kooweerup Regional Health Centre.
Men of all ages, their partners and children gathered on Friday evening to celebrate the opening of the facility.
Health Promotion Practitioner Aileen Thoms said the Men’s Shed program was a great way to promote good male health.
She said they had proven to be effective in reducing the debilitating effects of social isolation and depression as well as providing a valuable social network.
“We are hoping the shed will bring together people of all ages and hope people will bring their ideas along,” she said.
“There are some great stories out there about men who have Alzheimer’s or dementia who handle a workshop manual or tools for making something that reminds them of things from their past.”
Depending on the interests and skills of the men, activities can be wide and varied from carpentry to cooking, getting together and making music or working on a community project.
The Kooweerup Men’s Shed overlooks the newly established community garden at the health centre.
It is one of 200 men’s sheds across Australia.
The Kooweerup facility is open to males of all ages.
Anyone wanting to visit the shed or keen to take part in its running and programs can contact Rick Wakelin at Kooweerup Regional Health Service on 5997 9684.
