THE Black Saturday fires have resulted in an influx of volunteers to Cardinia Shire’s fire brigades.
Lisa Hicks, Brigades Administration Support Officer for the Cardinia catchment, said about 40 people had signed up at CFAs across the Western Port Area after the disaster.
But she says the number of new recruits is hardly surprising.
“It’s common after the fire season, particularly if we’ve had a busy time,” Mrs Hicks said.
“They realise how much they would like to help.”
Mrs Hicks said the volunteers would go through six months of training, and was hopeful most would be around by the end of it.
But she said fighting fires wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
“Not everyone is cut out to be a firefighter,” Mrs Hicks said.
She said firefighters felt part of their community, but this could also be achieved through volunteering at other local organisations.
