Demand up on light yarding

THE yarding at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange was down by 280 head for last Wednesday’s fat cattle sale.
Greater demand for vealers resulted in a 16 cent rise in price, to 176 cents, and the top end of the vealer category made to 243 cents.
Some 387 vealers were on offer with feedlotters busy in the bidding.
Only 57 heifers were yarded, but sold to solid de-mand, remaining steady in price at 142.9 and reaching 172 cents.
Steers also remained firm in price averaging 160.4 cents, quality was above average compared to recent sales with the top price a healthy 190.2 cents.
The demand for bullocks hasn’t eased, the average this week was 160.2 cents with prices fairly similar across the yarding as the top was 172 cents.
Quality was excellent in this smaller penning of good heavy bullocks.
The bull and cow sale on Thursday saw minimal changes in value, with bulls steady at 138 cents average to top at 158 cents.
Cows topped at 154.6 and again remained steady at 110.2, quality was slightly down on recent sales with the colder weather starting to take effect.
