Prices ease on lighter yardings

THE larger yardings of recent weeks have given processors extra stock in the short term, which in turn eased prices in the bullock, steer and heifer categories at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul.
Bullocks made to 170 cents and slipped two cents on average to 158.2, quality was maybe not of recent sale standards for the lighter yarding.
Only 23 heifers were yarded, easing three cents to 139.8, top sale was 165.2. Heifer quality was easier as vendors are tending to keep better heifers for breeding. Steers also retreated three cents on average to return 156.8, steers this week were of better quality, but failed to show in the top price of 174.6.
Vealers were the only category to show improvement lifting their average by two cents to 178.1, and although there was no repeat of last week’s top price, a higher percentage of better quality head saw several make to 232 cents.
On Thursday bulls and cows both sold to stronger demand and increased their respective average prices by six cents. Bulls sold to a top price of 158 cents to average 144.3, while cows reached 144 cents with a good jump in average to 116.2.
Quality was good over the yard, with demand dictating the price. This week’s average weight was similar to last sale at 509 kilograms per head.
