EXPECTATIONS of another small to medium size yarding did not occur, as most people forgot about the forthcoming public holiday next week.
Coupled with the colder weather, the supply of cattle lifted by 50 per cent, and included a lot more cattle in forward store condition. Having said that the breeding of these plainer cattle suited the feedlots, and many were purchased for on-feeding.
There were fewer good quality vealers penned, but there was a very good selection of grain-assisted cattle sold. Most of these were of good quality, but varied greatly in weight, which affected the overall prices.
The competition was unchanged, but quality changes, and less demand for heavy steers and bullocks saw some cattle sell at slightly cheaper rates.
There was only one sale of top quality vealers at the top prices of 237.6 cents with most B and C muscle vealers making between 175 cents and 220 cents per kilogram.
There was a lot of very good quality B2 and B3 supplementary-fed yearlings penned that weighed up to and over 500 kilograms liveweight. Depending on their weight prices were between 180 cents and 220 cents per kilogram.
Due to the strong demand from lot feeders a lot of C muscle steers and heifers in fair condition made from 165 cents and 188 cents per kilogram. Because of the good breeding of most of the cattle, the plainer shape and poorer condition cattle made anywhere between 130 cents and 172 cents per kilogram.
Demand was not as strong for the heavier and older cattle penned, which saw price averages ease one cent to three cents per kilogram.
Heavy steers made from 162 cents to 189 cents, and the grown steers made between 158 cents and 175 cents per kilogram.
A small selection of older heifers infiltrated the yarding, and made from 138 cents to 153 cents per kilogram.
