Prices and quality lower

THE supply of cattle fell at VLE Pakenham, and so did the quality with a much larger percentage of plainer condition cattle penned. A number of these plain quality cattle were not as well bred as some others.
There was less competition, however despite this prices for good quality cattle of comparable quality were equal to the previous week. Because of the plainer nature of the cattle price averages were two cents to seven cents per kilogram lower.
Only small numbers of very good quality vealers were penned, and these sold to strong demand making between 190 cents and 236 cents per kilogram. Reasonable to good quality vealers made between 165 cents and 190 cents per kilogram.
Also in shorter supply was supplementary fed yearlings, which sold well making from 190 cents to 229 cents per kilogram. Prices for grass fattened yearling steers were between 165 cents and 188 cents, while similar quality heifers made from 155 cents to 185 cents per kilogram.
Although some of the faces were different, the same number of lot feeders were purchasing cattle. Prices for the better bred steers and heifers were between 165 cents and 188 cents with a number of plainer condition, and plainer bred cattle making from 145 cents to 168 cents per kilogram.
Fewer heavy yearling steers and bullocks were yarded, which kept prices at recent levels. Steers made from 165 cents to 183 cents per kilogram. A small selection of grown heifers made between 145 cents and 165 cents per kilogram.
