THE strength of the feedlot fraternity led to different results, depending on the cattle sold from the larger offering at VLE Pakenham this week.
Overall the yarding was of better quality, partly aided by a larger number of supplementary fed and grain-fattened yearlings being offered.
This helped to lift the averages of some cattle, but with at least one buyer not present, and a number of others only half interested, there was a definite cheaper trend for a number of cattle. A lot of this was seen for the top end cattle with some sales up to seven cents per kilogram cheaper.
As few vealers were penned, and strong demand from lot feeders, a number of vealers sold at unchanged rates. However, the best quality B muscle vealers made to 235 cents while most other vealers made between 167 cents and 210 cents per kilogram.
Buyers relied on supplementary fed yearlings to fill orders for very good quality cattle, and paid up to 228 cents, which was three cents to seven cents per kilogram cheaper. One consignment of fed yearlings that were in very good 3 score condition only made from 184 cents to 196 cents per kilogram.
Where price trends were steady was for a large number of steers and heifers bought to feed on grain. Steers were bought for 165 cents to 189 cents, and large number of heifers made 165 to 185 cents per kilogram.
Some of these cattle were in store condition and good numbers were of killable quality. Restockers paid up to 196 cents for lightweight Angus steer calves and plain condition cattle made mostly between 145 cents and 170 cents per kilogram.
In the yarding 175 grown cattle were penned, and steers sold well making up to 189 cents per kilogram. Most sales of prime and manufacturing steers were between 145 cents and 185 cents, equal to the previous sale. Grown heifers also sold well making from 147 cents and 170 cents per kilogram.
