Tips for weaning

THE Department of Primary Industries has some tips to help farmers raise healthy, heavy and fully weaned calves by 12 weeks of age.
Raising calves weighing 100kg at 12 weeks can be challenging for many farmers but with advice from the DPI’s senior veterinary officer Gippsland, Sue Hides, the challenge can be met. Ms Hides says calves should be removed from their mothers within 12 hours after birth and all calves should be topped up with two litres of top quality colostrum by teat or stomach tube when removed from the calving paddock or pad.
Farmers should take time investing in good colostrum management as it is a key element in disease prevention in young calves. Calves should receive 10 per cent of their body weight in colostrum daily.
