WINTER can be a dangerous time for wombats. Maryknoll Wildlife Shelter operator Reg Mattingley said the earlier dusk meant that many wombats came out for a bite to eat during peak traffic times, and he urged motorists to keep an eye out for the furry marsupials.
He said wombats would travel a few kilometres a night in search of food, and he had heard reports of people seeing up to 30 wombats grazing by the roadside in fire-affected areas.
