Smooth operator glides in

By RUSSELL BENNETT

AS THE business end of the Ellinbank and District Football League’s cut-throat West division draws nearer, Garfield is set to unleash its new weapon on the competition – former Casey Cardinia star John Atwell.
The wingman-forward hasn’t played senior footy since badly dislocating his thumb playing for Karingal in Round 2 of the Peninsula league season but he quietly made his return for the Stars on Saturday – blowing out the cobwebs in the reserves after being enticed across to the club by his cousin and senior player-coach Ryan Hendy.
For those who are (somehow) unaware, Atwell’s nickname is ‘Smooth’ – and for good reason.
He seemingly glides across the turf, is a great decision-maker, kicks well and is strong overhead. All in all, he’s not a bad inclusion for the reigning premiers.
“I’ve played either with or against him every year he’s played senior footy,” Hendy said of Atwell, who is still in his twenties.
“He’s capable of being as good as anyone in the Casey Cardinia league and I’m rapt to have him.”
Expect Atwell – who is best known for his stints at Pakenham and Doveton – to play in the seniors from here on out this season, and don’t be at all surprised to see him line up again in the green and gold for a full 2015 season.
