MOST people grow up dreaming of driving a sports car, but Pakenham’s Don Jackson is living the dream.
His first dabble with sports cars came with the Vauxhall Velox in the 1950s before his passion burned stronger when he became a rally car navigator.
Mr Jackson’s relationship with luxury vehicles reached a crescendo 14 years ago when he purchased an Austin Healey Sprite Mark III.
“I was unable to find out the exact period it was made, but with the records of when they were made and going by the engine number, I’ve narrowed it down to either December ‘64 or January ‘65,” the 76yearold said.
Mr Jackson scored the automobile for just $2500 from an old Dandenong High School friend, but to say it was not in peak condition would be an understatement.
“By the time I bought it, I was close to retirement and couldn’t afford a Jaguar Etype or the much bigger version of the Austin Healey. I’ve done a lot of the restoration myself, but the body work was a bit beyond me. I’ve probably had to spend $12,000 to $15,000 on it, but don’t tell the wife,” he said.
As with many owners who divert to the vintage models, Mr Jackson has fond memories of the past.
“I suppose it offers a bit of nostalgia going back to the old days,” he said.
“It really handles well. I enjoy driving it and getting out in the open air.”
The car not only holds a special place in Mr Jackson’s heart, but, as he found out, also in the Austin Healey Sprite Drivers Club and one English tourist.
“I was stopped by an English tourist a few years ago and we had a chat about the car,” he said.
“He used to own one in England. I quite often get glances from people.”
Mr Jackson’s fourwheeled enthusiasm has well and truly been passed on to his two children, David, 43, and Merryn, 40.
“I’m pleased they’ve turned into very responsible drivers and I’m pleased to see the disciplines they’ve learned from being in a car club,” he said.
