LAND will be opened up for residential development in Kooweerup to make way for an expected population boom.
The town’s population is expected to increase from around 2000 residents to more than 3000 by 2021.
Cardinia Shire Council is seeking State Government approval to rezone 28.7 hectares of rural land bounded by Rossiter Road and Sybella Avenue.
Developers are keen to open up the area for residential housing.
Port Ward councillor Doug Hamilton said council was trying to ensure the growth happened smoothly.
“We are trying to create some sort of orderly approach to development of this land,” Cr Hamilton said.
“There will be 180 houses at least there, we’d like to see the development created in such a way that it is not going to cause havoc.”
