WGCA shocks the Valley

Ian Ferguson
WEST Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Yarra Valley on Sunday.
The WGCA was looking at a near certain defeat when Yarra Valley cruised to 1/100 and was only 71 runs in arrears.
However in a stunning reversal of form the WGCA quickly ran through the remaining opposition batsman to win the game with six overs to spare.
Upper Beaconsfield spinner Scott Pitcher was the bowling hero of the match, snaring 4/24 from his ten overs.
He received good support from Merinda Park seamer Shannon Mathers, (1/12 from 5.3 overs) and Cranbourne Meadows skipper Shaun White who finished with 1/35 from his ten overs after conceding 17 runs in his first over.
Young speedsters in Brendan McGrath from Nar Nar GoonMaryknoll and Nyora’s Nick Fairbanks each collected a wicket as well.
Earlier in the day the WGCA scored 171 from 48 overs and it was Cardinia’s prolific scoring Mark Cooper who once more kept the scorers busy.
Cooper scored a fine 77 while another runmaking machine in Lang Lang’s Cameron Chasemore contributed 33 and Beaconsfield’s Don Kerslake added 18.
This was a pleasing result for West Gippsland that now oppose Ferntree Gully at Cranbourne on Sunday, 3 December.
