AUSTRALIA Day celebrations in Kooweerup will feature the Australia Day ambassador Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos.
The cancer researcher, born in Melbourne in 1970, began her career by completing a science degree at the University of Melbourne.
She went on to finish her PhD in 1995 at the Austin Research Institute and then travelled to the United States for further research.
Professor Apostolopoulos has made some important discoveries in alterations in cancer cells and how this can protect against cancer.
Her accomplishments include publishing over 100 scientific papers, being an inventor on eight patents and receiving dozens of awards including the Channel 10 and Herald Sun Young Achiever of the Year award and the Victorian Tall Poppy award.
The celebrations, which are being held at the Kooweerup Community Centre, begin at 8.30am with a free breakfast and will conclude about 10am.
