Where to for the Stars?

GARFIELD Football Club is at the crossroads and that’s a fact.
The situation has nothing to with its loyal members or players or, for that matter, its administration.
It also has little to do with its onfield performance this year.
Despite its best efforts to become the premier club in the district through its affiliation with the only VCFL major league in Gippsland, Garfield remains a David among Goliaths.
The fact is Garfield is a community football club situated smack in the middle of a prospering community competition (the Ellinbank and District Football League) but still playing against rich, bigtown rivals with too many resources and situated too far away for the liking of many followers.
Over the past few weeks many loyal to the Stars have made their thoughts on the club’s future known and the whisper that it should immediately seek a transfer has become a roar.
Should Garfield seek a transfer to the locally based EDFL and run the risk of losing a number of its betterquality players?
Maybe a move west to the strong MPNFL Casey Cardinia League, renewing old WGFL rivalries, would be the best resolution given a vacancy will open up in that competition next year?
Or should the Stars tough it out and stay in the WGLFL in the hope that the best locally bred talent will see the light and join the push to build a community powerhouse in the big league?
Gazette readers can write in and tell us their view on the Stars’ future.
Letters will be published in the football liftout at the editor’s discretion.
Names and contact details of letter writers for verification must be supplied (not necessarily for publication).
Please address letters to Pakenham Gazette sports department, PO Box 9, Pakenham, 3810, or email to sportstarnewsgroup.com.au.
