Garfield earns promotion

IN a very tightly fought match on Saturday, Garfield Bowls Club (2) divisionsix team defeated Trafalgar to gain promotion to divisionfive for next season.
The match, played in good conditions at Warragul, Garfield beat the previously undefeated Trafalgar team by seven shots.
Due to the illness of Laurence Wright’s wife, Iris, a change had to be made and Les Shatwell was selected to fill in.
Laurence had played in every match to reach the play off and unfortunately Les became ill during the match and was replaced by the team manager Gordon Beer.
Scores were: Alex Mentiplay, Geoff Gaskell, Wayne Gunton and Matthew Smith drew with Stan Woolridge’s team 20 shots each.
Bob Hope, Les Shatwell/Gordon Beer, Bill Doherty and Bill Charles defeated Greg Sephton’s team 28 to 21.
Matthew Smith, a firstyear bowler aged 15 achieved an enviable record of a pennant and a win in a promotion final.
