Big show for small farms

EXHIBITS and seminars proved popular with attendees at the Small Farming Field Days held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds last weekend.
The Small Farming Victoria event, which is an initiative of the Lang Lang and Kooweerup Rotary Club, aims to cater to the growing number of small farmers and people seeking a lifestyle change from across Victoria and interstate.
Event chief executive officer Kevin Corbett said a steady stream of visitors to the field day came through the gates on Sunday but the attendance was slightly lower on Saturday.
“The hot weather may have put people off attending on Saturday,’’ he said.
“There was a slight increase in numbers overall compared to last year,’’ Mr Corbett said.
Mr Corbett said the seminars held over the weekend were popular.
“The seminar area was close to capacity for a number of presentations, including the rabbit farming seminar,’’ he said.
Other seminar topics included financial planning, small farming and bee keeping.
“Snakes Buster and the Birds of Prey showed their animals and their was a working dog demonstration,’’ Mr Corbett said.
Children had the opportunity to go on a jumping castle and to meet Gazette mascot Wally Wombat.
Exhibits relating to current farming issues, such as water, windmills, tanks and pumps, were popular.
A total of 75 per cent of funds raised goes into a trust fund for the development of a retirement village facility in the Lang LangKooweerup area.
Mr Corbett said: “Overall, the days were a success.
“It was only our second year.
“We will review things this week and work towards a bigger and better field days next year,’’ he said.
