THE past week has been exciting for Drouin’s women golfers.
Drouin hosted the WGWG Pennant finals last Monday week and made history by being the first club to have both their Division 1 and Division 2 teams win in the same year. Division 2 also made a hattrick by winning three pennants in a row.
MEN
There were 97 players in the field for Saturday’s Drouin monthly medal.
Shane Dwyer (four) had a superb round, scoring 71 off the stick to win the medal and A Grade with nett 67. Breaking the par of the course is a fine effort from the back markers, especially in winter conditions. Runnerup in A Grade was Paul Duivenvoorden with a fine 68. Wayne Robbins, John Piner, Rob Piner and Steve Bethune all had 72.
In B Grade Geoff Closter (18) also had a great day, winning with nett 69. Jack Gough was runnerup with 72 on a countback from Derek Anderson 72. Jim McCormack (24) returned with nett 70 to take out C Grade. Erroll Hopkinson was runner up with 73 on a countback from Ray Cropley. Nearesttopin at the second was Shane Dwyer, at the fifth Paul Matthews, at the 14th Greg Smyth and at 17th David Low. Balls down the line went to 74 and the CCR was 73.
Last Wednesday Shane Dwyer (five) warmed up for his monthly medal triumph by winning the midweek stableford competition with 40 points and breaking his handicap to 4. Warragul visitor Geoff Hewson was runnerup with 39 on a countback from Darren Adams. Ivan Moffatt and Cameron Snell both returned with 38. Doug Scott battled shank related nightmares to win B Grade with 35 on a countback from Danny LaFrantz. Steve Henning, Bill McGinness and Charlie Hardy all returned with 34. Arnold Mills (21) had a nice day out to win C Grade with 37 points from runnerup Mick Gargan. John Gidley was next on 35. Nearesttopin at the second was Doug Scott, 19th Max Hine, 23rd (pro pin) Doug Scott. Balls went down to 34 on a countback and the CCR was 73.
There were 34 players for last Thursday’s senior ninehole comp and Charlie Hardy and Peter Downward tied in the men’s section with 18 points while Val Johnson won the ladies with 14. Les Madden won last Monday’s competition with 19 from Peter Devries with 18 and Mick Devries with 17.
It was good to see about 40 people enjoying the happy hour and finger food in the clubhouse for presentations on Saturday with thanks to the social club. The club also congratulated the ladies for creating history by winning the Division 1 and 2 pennants.
LADIES
Division 1 defeated Trafalgar 4/3 and Division 2 had a great win by defeating Trafalgar 6/1 and Division 3 was won by Traralgon.
Afternoon tea was provided afterwards, and a celebratory fun night was later enjoyed in the clubhouse.
Tuesday’s game was the Eileen Smith 4BBB Stableford, with four to qualify for match play, in conjunction with the WGV Centenary Event qualifying round.
The winners were Shirley Todd and Robyn O’Brien with 43 points and the runnersup were Mary Tymensen and Jenni Harris with 42 points.
Downtheline balls went to Julie Robertson and Poss Leeson (40 points) and Bev Goodwin and Margaret Purcell (40).
The four teams to qualify for match play were Shirley Todd and Robyn O’Brien, Mary Tymensen and Jenni Harris, Julie Robertson and Poss Leeson and Bev Goodwin and Margaret Purcell.
Nearest the pin on the 14th was Judy Bibby and on the 19th was Fay Bastin. The Propin was won by Margaret Purcell.
The qualifiers for the WGV Centenary event were Shirley Todd and Robyn O’Brien, who will play at Lang Lang on 14 August and hopefully continue to the finals at Royal Melbourne in November.
The Thursday ninehole seniors competition was won by Val Johnson (14 points) and the runnersup were Shirley Todd and Heather Fitzpatrick with 13 each.
This week competition is stroke with the Monthly Medal, the first round of club championships, the first round of the Edna Cropley Trophy and the third round of the John Arnold Memorial Trophy.
On 13 June there will be will be stroke competition, the second round of the club championships, the second round of the Edna Cropley Trophy and the fourth round of the Silver Spoon.
