Games spectacular in Garfield

THE Garfield community turned out in force to watch the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on the big screen on Wednesday, 15 March.
Cardinia Shire Council’s manager sustainable communities Maria Berry said more than 50 people attended the screening at the Garfield Community Centre.
“The Garfield township won the right to host this screening and free community event due its community’s involvement in the Cardinia Converge event held last November,” Ms Berry said.
“The Garfield township had the largest turnout of residents, based on percentage of population, of all the townships that gathered at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on 20 November to take part in the shire’s first warming up for the Commonwealth Games event.”
Ms Berry said it was wonderful to see so many people attend the Opening Ceremony screening and free celebration at Garfield, which was held from 7.30pm and included nibbles and nonalcoholic drinks.
“It was great to see the Garfield community embrace the spirit of the Games and come together to watch the spectacular Opening Ceremony.”
