Gather around for a highland fling

By Jim Mynard
CASEY mayor Kevin Bradford said the council was proud to be the major sponsor of the 20th annual Berwick Highland Gathering.
Cr Bradford said the gathering would be held at Akoonah Park Berwick on Sunday (12 February).
He said the Rotary Club of Narre Warren was coordinating the games that traditionally provided a great family day.
“Over the last two decades, the Highland Gathering has become increasingly popular as additional spectacles are added to the program,” Cr Bradford said.
“The Berwick Highland Gathering is certainly a spectacular event and a great day out for the whole family.
“Features of the day include massed pipe bands and band competitions, heavy lifting games, Scottish Highland and country dancing, clan displays, and Black Scottish Terriers and West Highland Whites in competition.
“Visitors have the opportunity to watch a display of brute strength and determination with a series of heavy lifting events including caber tossing, heavy throwing demonstrations, and the ‘Atlas Stones of Strength’ which features the hurling of giant stones.
The gathering begins at 10am and entry is via Manuka Road, Berwick, (Melway 111 H10).
Admission is adults $5, pensioners $3 and children under 14 are admitted free.
Food and drinks are available and free off-road parking is also provided.
