Judy’s so down to earth

Berwick environmental campaigner Judy Smith is doing her best to save the planet.
Whether it is removing pesky pittosporums or simply admiring the beauty of the surroundings, she is as enthusiastic as they come.
Ms Smith is a member of the Friends of Wilson Botanic Park, the Australian Plants Society, the Berwick and District Bushwalking Club and is the president of the Friends of Cardinia Park Sanctuary.
“I’ve always loved gardening; I like things to be beautiful,” she said. “I just like to give back to society.”
Ms Smith takes much pride in the work she has done for both Wilson Botanic Park and Beaconsfield Flora and Fauna Reserve.
“It is wonderful to stand back and watch people enjoying it,” she said.
“It is so peaceful and we are constantly trying to improve it.”
Her devotion to the cause also leads to her disappointment at a minority who choose to denigrate the environment.
“I find it devastating and it is the same for the graffiti,” Ms Smith said. “I am forever painting over the graffiti on the bridges.”
She believes further education towards youth is the answer, but also recognises that it will be an ongoing process.
“It would be good to educate the school children. Most of them are very good, but it is a handful that do all this damage,” Ms Smith said.
“No one stops to teach them, although they do have environmental classes at schools, but there is still more that can be done.”
For now, however, she remains proud of the effort she has put into her preservation work, particularly at the Beaconsfield Flora and Fauna Reserve.
“I am very satisfied; I never thought we’d achieve what we’ve achieved,” Ms Smith said.
“We have a core group of six people who are wonderful workers and do an amazing job.
“I do appreciate that they stay with and help me.”
