Rain threat cuts field

SATURDAY was the first round of the Robbins Family Trophy, 4BBB Par, with a threat of rain possibly contributing to the smaller than usual field of just 44 pairs at Drouin Golf Club.
The first round leaders and winners of the day event were the team of Joe Coggins and Garth Quenault with a superb +10. One shot back were four pairs who had to be separated on a countback.
John Denholm and Chris Brydon received the runnersup vouchers on a countback from Jim Bransgrove and Ron Nocentini, Shane Dwyer and Liam Dwyer and Shane Golding and Fred Barton.
The next best score was +8 from Wayne Robbins and Paul Matthews. Nearest the pin 14th John Gwynn, 17th Barrry Dyson, 19th Brad Hamill, 23rd (pro pin) John Denholm while Phil Dignan eagled the par five 15th hole.
A good field of 103 players contested the midweek Stroke competition. Barry Cunningham (12) won A grade with 69 nett on a countback from Tony Elliot. B grade winner was Jack Gardiner (18) with 68. Runnerup was Mike Mareska on 69. C grade winner was Max Johnson (26) also with 68. Runnerup was John Gwynn, 69, on a countback from Garth Quenault. Other better scores for the day came from Dick Lancaster 70, John Denholm 70, Charlie Hardy 71 and Danny Gorman 71. Nearest the pin on the 14th was Arch Lugton, 19th Mike Roberts, 23rd (pro pin) Bill Pyle. The CCR was 71 and balls went down to 73 on a countback.
Thursday’s senior ninehole event was attended by 39 players with Garth Quenault winning with 21 points from his fourball partner Joe Coggines 19 and Les Madden 19. Marion Devlin had 20 points to win the ladies section from Von Kenny 19.
Tomorrow (Thursday) is the annual Publican’s Challenge Four Person Ambrose Event, and entries are still open. Saturday is a 4BBB Par and the final round of the Robbins Family Trophy.

LADIES

Last Tuesday was Gymkhana Day for the Drouin Women’s Golfers. This was a 4BBB stableford event.
President Audrey welcomed members, WGWG delegate Sheila McDowell, our sponsor and visitors from Trafalgar, Melton Valley, Churchill Park, Beacon Hills, Berwick/Montuna, Pakenham, Long Island, Korumburra, Parklands, Cheltenham and Warragul.
The A grade winners, with a score of 49 points, were Lorna Hoskins and Evette Lane (Warragul). The runnersup were Kerryn Milner and Sandy Heenan (Warragul) with 48 points.
B grade winners were Paula Rae and Noeline King (both from Beacon Hills) with 48 points; runnersup Sue Hatfield and Karen Lewis Williams (Parklands) with 47 points.
The longest drive in A grade was Mavis Dye (Warragul) and in B grade Ethel Manley. The straightest drive was made by Bev Daniels (Berwick/Montuna).
Nearest the pin on the 14th was Jan Belette (Long Island) and on the 19th Jill Brenchley.
Down the line balls went to Jean Kydd (Warragul) and Dagma Forbes 46 points, Betsy White and Norma Scott 46, Bev Goodwin and Marion Devlin 45, Fay Bastin and Barbara Worth (Warragul) 44, Joan Johnson and Melva Risstrom (Warragul) 44 and Eve Coghill and Coleen Pruser (Warragul) with 43 points on a countback from several others.
The Thursday ninehole seniors competition was won by Marion Devlin with 20 points with runnerup Vera Kenny on 19.
This week is stableford and next week will be the Grandmother’s Trophy.
West Gippsland senior ladies are reminded of their next match which will be at Traralgon on Monday 30 October.
