TOORADIN and Cardinia square off in the Kookaburra Cup decider this Sunday in what promises to be an exciting game of Twenty20 cricket.
The two finalists have set the standard for Twenty20 cricket in West Gippsland.
Tooradin, the inaugural champions are yet to taste defeat in seven Twenty20 matches.
The 200607 tournament is Cardinia’s first crack at the format and has not only swept all before it, but is the competition’s highest run scorers.
Tooradin’s hopes of defending its title rests on the shoulders of skipper Trevor Johnston.
The competition’s alltime leading run scorer, JohnsTon has again led the way in 2006/07 with 252 runs for the season at the impressive strike rate of 192.81 and an average of 84.
He has three half centuries in this year’s tournament, as well as this season’s highest individual score, a scintillating 94 notout off 54 balls against Devon Meadows.
Tooradin’s middle order has been brittle at times and another brilliant performance from its skipper will be crucial to its title defence.
Cardinia, the WGCA’s Agrade ladder leaders, has quickly adapted to Twenty20 cricket, progressing through its group with two bonuspoint wins.
Hardhitting opening batsman Steve Patterson has led the way for the Bulls, scoring three half centuries and 222 runs at an average of 55.5 and a strike rate of 170.77.
His hard hitting has been a perfect foil for skipper and leading WGCA batsman Mark Cooper, who sealed his side’s berth in the final with a stylish 71 from 48 deliveries.
The winner of the Kookaburra Cup will take home a cheque for $1000, while the runnersup will receive $500.
The first spectator to catch a six will also take home $100.
The match will start at 2pm at Glover Reserve, Devon Meadows, (Melway reference 138 D6) and entry is free. For full competition results, tables and grand final details, visit the kookaburracup.cricketvictoria.com.au website.
