GARFIELD’S bid to reach out to young people in the community has been praised by Cardinia Shire councillors.
About 150 people turned out to a recent event organised by Garfield Football Club in response to concerns about youth suicide, depression and isolation.
Bunyip Ward councillor Bill Pearson said he attended the event with Councillor Brett Owen and was greatly impressed.
“It was an excellent function,” he said.
The community night featured former AFL legend Jim Stynes, well known also for his voluntary work with the Reach Foundation.
Cr Pearson said Stynes really connected with his audience.
“Jim Stynes’s rapport with young people was incredible,” he said.
“He has a warmth about him and a dry humour that really came across and people responded to it.”
