CARDINIA Shire mayor Kate Lempriere has lost a bid to unseat incumbent Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) president councillor Dick Gross.
Cr Lempriere, who was not a member of the MAV board, contested the election from the outside and faced an almost impossible task to win.
She said she had no issue with Cr Gross as president, but wanted to raise some issues with the MAV.
“He is a good person for the job and I congratulate him, but I stood in order to create more discussion,” Cr Lempriere said.
“The MAV needs to become a stronger lobby, particularly for rural councils.
“I want the MAV to relook at itself and hear what I was saying.
“It is too citycentric.
“We need to look at rural councils that are doing it tough.
“I thought more rural councils would have taken the opportunity to stir the pot, but the level of interest in the election was not high.”
Cr Lempriere said she thought more rural councillors would have stood for the MAV position.
“I don’t think the MAV is doing enough, but I think I have brought some issues forward,” she said.
The MAV is a representative body for councils in Victoria.
