Motor sports support revs up

PLANS to host a round of the Victorian motorkhana championships in Pakenham have been backed by Cardinia Shire Council in a move that could see the event run at Greenhills.
The councilowned site on the outskirts of town has been earmarked for the new South East Business Park but may host a oneoff motorsports event after councillors voted last week to support Pakenham Auto Club (PAC) in its endeavours to present a round of the state titles.
The news was welcomed as sensational by auto club member John Carney.
The club has been without a home since it had to leave its former headquarters in Kooweerup Road to make way for the Pakenham Bypass.
Mayor Bill Ronald said hosting a round of the state titles would be a coup for Pakenham.
He said council was looking at the Greenhills land as a site that was potentially available for the oneoff event in March.
Cr Ronald said the site was only tentative at this stage as shire staff still had to assess the practicality of the proposal, but was keen to give the PAC every possible support.
Councillors said the motorkhana had the potential to bring hundreds of people to the town.
They said the event would not cost council and would be a drawcard for the area.
