Scorpions sting twice

CASEY Scorpions seniors and reserves both had victories at Port Melbourne in round two of the VFL over the Easter weekend.
In the main game the Scorpions were the better team for most of the day, but poor kicking and turnovers could have proved costly. Port Melbourne could see a glimmer of hope late in the last quarter and nearly spoilt the double win for the Scorpions.
The Scorpions took command early and Fergus Watts looked strong with good marking and two goals to give the Scorpions and early lead. But Watts suffered a fractured leg in the first half and will miss about 12 weeks.
Allan Murray, Mark McGough and Nigel Carmody provided plenty of drive through the midfield and young Kyle Matthews showed out.
Around the ground Michael Rix was asserting his presence and giving the onballers plenty to work with. Ben Heenan was giving good run from halfback and Daniel Rigg held up Port Melbourne’s attacks on goal.
Up forward Ben Fraser showed he has a good marking style and two good goals highlighted his ability.
In the last quarter the Scorpions were under attack from a home team desperate for a win, but worked hard, Carmody, Murray and Rix all showing strong leadership to hold off a strongly finishing Port Melbourne.
Scores: Casey Scorpions 17.14.116 d Port Melbourne 17.7.109.
Goals: A. Murray 4, B. Fraser, F. Watts, M. Rix, N. Carmody, J. Sweeney 2, J. Rafferty, M. McGough, K. Matthews 1.

RESERVES

The team was filled with new young players keen to get into the action early, however Port Melbourne took an early lead with five quick goals. After settling down the Scorpions’ young guns started to get themselves back in the game with strong marking up forward by Alex Silvagni and good work around the packs by Chris Dunne.
After quartertime the Scorpions slowly built a lead and kept Port Melbourne at bay. Sheldon Fredericks was a fine player all day with strength and courage and provided good leadership for the young players. In defence Evan Pannazo also showed he is a player of the future with good run and disposal.
The young Scorpions will play the Northern Bullants this weekend.
Scores: Casey Scorpions 16.9.105 d Port Melbourne 12.16.88.
Goals: C. Dunne 5, P. Florance, A. Silvagni, G. Boyd, L. Carratelli 2, J. Cann, M. Demicoli, S. Fredricks 1.
