BERWICK Fire Brigade attended two arson attacks during the weekend.
Brigade captain Alan Boyd said the fires caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.
He said in one incident on Sunday night a vehicle was recklessly driven on a Marlesford Crescent park before being set on fire.
“Emergency services were alerted at 11pm and fire crews from Berwick CFA were quickly on scene.
“The vehicle, a Daihatsu Mira, was destroyed in the fire.”
Captain Boyd said that on Saturday night units were called to a large waste bin on fire at the rear of the Parkhill Plaza Shopping Centre in Parkhill Drive at 10.45pm.
“Paper and cardboard in the bin had been deliberately set on fire and the bin was damaged by the blaze that also scorched the outside of a building.
“This was the second similar fire at the shopping centre in the past fortnight and the third suspicious blaze in the area over recent weeks,” he said.
Police were investigating the fires.
Berwick CFA crews also attended a motor vehicle smash at the corner of Greaves Road and Domain Drive on Friday night.
Two cars were involved in the collision and firefighters cleaned up large oil spills from the vehicles.
A woman was transported by ambulance to hospital after the collision.
Firefighters removed another oil hazard at the intersection of the Old Princes Highway and York Road, Berwick during early afternoon on Sunday.
