Challenge thrown out to eat healthy

BUSINESSES have been challenged to prove that fast food can also be good for you.
Cardinia and Casey Councils have launched a new joint award program set to promote healthy eating.
The councils are seeking entries from restaurants, hotels, cafes, bistros, takeaway and sandwich shops interested in taking part in the healthy food program.
The program provides food premises with the encouragement, support and recognition, to lead the way towards excellence in safe food handling and hygiene, nutrition, and increasing the affordability of healthy foods.
All food premises that meet the criteria will be rewarded with a Choice Awards certificate to display, free promotional opportunities in Cardinia Shire Council’s community newsletter and website, and free nutrition education and advice by an accredited dietitian.
Project officer Sara McAlister said the project is part of the three year, $300,000 Sprouting New Ideas initiative, funded by VicHealth to improve access to healthy foods in both Casey and Cardinia.
“It offers great promotional opportunities for businesses, and improved food options for Cardinia and Casey residents,” she said.
All businesses interested in taking part will be invited to a workshop in May, with a qualified dietitian, environmental health officer and guest chef, where they will receive tips, support and advice on integrating healthier options into their menus.
Cardinia and Casey Councils will then create a full directory of CHOICE Award participants, to inform the community of the availability of healthier food options.
