Dress to impress

THE Summer Racing Carnival draws to a close at Pakenham on 26 February with the running of the $100,000 Pakenham Cup.
For ladies that like to dress up or simply looking for an excuse to splurge on a new outfit, the Pakenham Cup is the occasion to showcase your new look.
And for those wanting to get competitive in the fashion stakes, there is the Fashions on the Field competition.
Despite the plethora of racing action happening on the track, many binoculars will be firmly focused on the fashions’ stage.
Generous donations from the local business community have the ladies competing for cash and prizes valued at more than $10,000.
Assistant racing manager, Michelle Tones said the prize pool had been significantly bolstered this year.
“We’re proud to announce it’s the largest fashion prize pool ever assembled for Pakenham Cup Day,” she said.
There will be two categories in the competition – ‘most elegant lady’ and the ‘best hat or fascinator’.
Registrations will be at the fashions’ stage in front of the members’ grandstand between midday and 1.30pm.
The first heat will start at 1.30pm.
Judges said they would pay close attention to detail and to be in contention for a prize, ladies need to ensure their outfit is suitable raceday attire and is complemented with matching accessories, such as shoes, jewellery, bag and headdress.
The shape of a hat, or fascinator is also important and should suit the shape of the face, without overpowering it.
Attending race meetings is a great way to learn the tricks of the trade and decide on suitable attire.
Keeping an eye on the fashions on the field stage is an easy way to learn how different contestants construct their complete outfits.
Fashion is a very personal thing and contestants should go with their individual style and comfort and above all, enjoy themselves.
