A MAN died after his car hit a horse and then ran off the road into a tree at Pakenham early on Tuesday morning.
The accident happened about 4.50am on the Princes Highway, at the intersection with Dore Road.
The driver, believed to be aged in his 50s or 60s, was killed in the collision. The horse also died.
The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle.
Police and emergency service crews remained at the scene for several hours.
Traffic on the highway’s eastbound lane was diverted at Ryan Road while the scene was cleared.
The man’s death brought the number of fatalities in the Cardinia Shire to four for the year.
Six people died on local roads last year.
