FORMER Melbourne now Rye ruckman Greg Doyle will line up for one last chance at premiership glory with the Demons, after they won Saturday’s tight preliminary final.
The 12point victory over a gallant Frankston was achieved after a horror start that saw the Bombers kick eight firstterm goals to one and lead by a massive 44 points at quarter time.
While Rye supporters were contemplating their “MadMonday” celebrations, their side was grinding its way back into the contest, but it still trailed by five goals at the final break and looked all but gone.
A barnstorming sevengoaltoone last quarter turned the result in favour of the Demons and saw it advance to play Langwarrin in the Nepean league grand final at Frankston Park next Saturday.
Young Rye defender Adam Kirkwood was named best for the Demons, while Bombers’ coach Leigh Stewart starred for his side.
In the Peninsula league minor premiers Chelsea won a thrilling second semifinal by four points over Mt Eliza at Frankston Park on Sunday.
While both sides kicked five goals in the opening term, the Seagulls added 10 behinds as well, blowing their chance to kick away to a matchwinning lead.
The Redlegs took advantage and led by nine points at halftime with Heath Goodale and Cam McIntyre controlling play around the ground and Corey Hamilton creating a good target in attack.
Chelsea regrouped and upped its intensity after the long break, leading by 14 points at threequarter time and setting up a classic final term with Mt Eliza kicking to the scoring end.
The Redlegs came back at their opponents but fell just short after some desperate defence from Mitch Grant and Justin Crough.
Mt Eliza will now play Seaford in this Sunday’s cutthroat preliminary final at Frankston Park.
