PEARCEDALE Football Club could be in for a long season after its three teams managed to score a total of only six goals between them in Saturday’s opening round in MPNFL Nepean League football.
Playing stronger and better equipped Langwarrin opponents, the senior side kicked two goals, both in the third quarter, the reserves booted three and the under18s just one in comprehensive losses.
The senior match was a scrappy affair in windy conditions with Langwarrin breaking away to a 22point lead at the first change and never looking back.
Pearcedale’s better players included Mathugh Vagg, Shane Urbans and Travis Reints.
Finalists from last season Frankston and Rye also had big victories, while Tyabb and Somerville started off their seasons on a positive note at the expense of Red Hill and Crib Point.
IN Peninsula League, 2005 premiers Mt Eliza had a solid start to the year with a 24point win over a competitive Frankston YCW in the grandfinal replay.
The side tipped to be Mt Eliza’s main challenger, Chelsea, recorded a dominant 47point result over EdithvaleAspendale.
The bigspending Seagulls have added a number of significant former VFA recruits to their list in a concerted effort to match the Redlegs this year.
Other winners in round one were Seaford over Mornington, Pines over Bonbeach and Karingal over Hastings under former Brisbane star Martin Pike.
