Nicknames catch on at the races

Glen Atwell
THE only thing better than one good nickname is a group of good nicknames and the recent Pakenham Cup meeting was a breeding ground for those itching to tell the story of their alternate identity.
The catch included Damien ‘Ranga’ Murphy, Rhys ‘What A Catch’ Nisbet, Cameron ‘Mulligrub’ Fletcher and David ‘Woewodin’ Williams.
Ranga originates from orangutan, but Damien never quite agreed with his mates’ blunt assessment of his looks.
“They all reckon I look like an Orangutan, but I don’t know, I guess it’s possible,’ he declared.
What A Catch leapt into the spotlight after taking the West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) catch of the season.
The Officer A grade player said people had likened his catch to Ricky Ponting’s effort, but Rhys wants the world to know it was his backwards leap that set the standard. “I took my catch before Ponting, he must have seen the photo in the Gazette and tried to go one better, but he fell just short of the mark,” What A Catch said.
Mulligrub, otherwise known as Cameron Fletcher, found his nickname after returning to local football. “I played at Mulgrave for a while, and when I came back to Berwick somehow Mulgrave got turned into Mulligrub. It’s stuck ever since,” he laughed.
David ‘Woewodin’ Williams was not keen to disclose how his nickname was coined, but his mates quickly filled in the gaps.
“It’s not just how good he is at playing football, but he also has a striking resemblance to the real player,” a source at the scene said.
But does ‘Woey’ look like the real Woewodin?
We’re not convinced!
